The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is design to catch and store soot from the exhaust to dramatically reduce emissions from a diesel engine. However their capacity and capability is limited. This means that all the soot it has trapped needs to be burnt off so a regeneration must take place. The regeneration burns off all of the excess soot that has been deposited in the filter cleanly, therefore reducing harmful emissions from the exhaust, protecting the environment and the air we breath.

DPF's usually block due to other underlying issues and cleaning isn't always enough. You need to have the actual problem diagnosed and rectified by a professional. If this is not done your DPF will block up again in the near future.

However sometimes a DPF may block up due to the vehicle only making short journeys. This does not allow the diesel particulate filter to get hot enough to regenerate, causing the DPF to block up quicker. You should refer to your vehicle handbook to see how to do a DPF regeneration.
